Pray for Newtown

By

We, the people, watch in disbelief. With tear-filled eyes and heavy hearts filled with empathy, despair and anger, we wonder. We question. We cry. In our churches, in our businesses, at sporting events, in government buildings, on college campuses, and in our schools...we wonder. We question. We cry. Sadly, as we search for answers, our society has conditioned us to look outward more than inward. More often than not, this approach takes us to one of the most polarizing subjects in America today: legislation. From issues of gun control, to violence in mainstream media, to pulling God out of schools and government buildings, you name it – when it comes to these issues, we are a deeply divided nation. And yet – this still seems to be the first place we look to solve our society’s problems. Please don’t misunderstand me, I do agree that laws have their place, and serve a purpose in our country. However, legislation has never, and will never solve the deepest issues we face as a society. Why? Because these issues are issues of the heart – and they start in the home!

The issues of the heart start with each and every one of us as individuals. They start when we decide to reprioritize our lives and put relationships before things. They start when we quit relegating our responsibility of raising our children to the schools, churches, to coaches, or even to the media (TV/Video Games should NOT serve as our babysitters!). They start when we begin to love as Christ called us to love…Him, and all others He has puts in our lives, including those in need, those who think or look differently, those who vote differently, those who take advantage of us, and yes, even those we feel are taking advantage of “the system.” We must learn to stand in the gap and to lead with love! Finally, they start when we realize that no legislative action can EVER remove God from our places of work, government buildings, or even our schools as long as WE, His people, are still in those places – because we, His people, can always pray!

So today as you wonder – pray. As you question – pray. As you cry – pray. In church - pray. In your home - pray. In your business - pray. In your car - pray. In government buildings - pray. On college campuses - pray. At sporting events - pray. And yes, especially in your school or your child’s school - PRAY! Pray for wisdom! Pray for peace! Pray for our brothers and sisters in Newtown, CT, pray for God’s hand to comfort and strengthen them in this time of great need! PRAY…for God’s Sake!
